And the Oscar goes to… best costumes.

Every year, the film industry experiences one of its most anticipated moments with the Oscars. The most recent edition (the 96th!) took place on March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

The day, as on previous occasions, was a real treat in terms of style. Nominees and special guests (celebrities, actors, communicators and authorities of the seventh art) took advantage of the occasion to offer a fashion show on the red carpet.

This year, there were extremely glamorous moments that were replicated by multiple magazines around the world, including that of the beautiful Anya Taylor-Joy in a haute couture dress by Dior or the spectacular Zendaya in an Armani Privé that accentuated her figure.

In addition to the shower of outfits, this important gala organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) also includes among its categories a crucial attraction for fashion lovers and professionals: the award for the best costume.

During the recent awards ceremony, five feature films, of course to be released in 2023, were nominated for the statuette: Barbie (Greta Gerwig), Poor Things (Yorgos Lanthimos), Napoléon (Ridley Scott), Killers of the Flower Moon (Martin Scorsese) and Oppenheimer (Christopher Nolan).

What do the experts consider when awarding this prize? Well, the fashion world is present to evaluate elements that include conceptualization, manufacturing, design and the grounded proposal of a costume designer who, through clothing and accessories, has managed to bring his talent to the context of the story as well as the characters in question.

This 2024, the Oscars considered everything from the pink craze of Barbie (clothes originally created for dolls in the history of this toy were updated by British designer Jacqueline Durran), to the complexity of Poor things , a film that finally became the winner of the night with English artist Holly Waddington responsible for the looks of the character Bella Baxter played by Emma Stone, walking between period styles, science fiction and contemporary flashes.

In conclusion? An opportunity to highlight the relevance that fashion has as a cultural phenomenon and artistic expression, as well as the creative and economic impact that its passage through other industries such as cinema represents.
