Montserrat Messeguer talks about her constant inspiration, Mexico in the world and the evolution of her own brand.
The person who closed the 81st edition of Intermoda with a spectacular presentation from Fashion Space speaks to our readers. She is Montserrat Messeguer , the designer behind a eponymous firm that this November celebrates its first seven years of existence.
Mexico has always been present in your fashion proposal. But, what is it that really inspires you?
“The art of our country. I have a northern perspective and I see it from a different perspective; what I like is this aesthetic of the contemporary world and also of women, we normally see hats or boots on men, especially in Mexico.”
How do you describe your buyer?
“Both men and women, because we have grown a lot in our male clients. They are relaxed people with their own style, they are confident, they are not bothered by attention, but they do not seek it either. They seek to be themselves.”
As an independent designer, how do you perceive the national market regarding the acceptance of Mexican design?
“There is more and more consumption and people willing to invest in Mexican fashion. However, there is still much to do. It is an interesting time in which we already see more brands, diverse proposals and for all ages. There is also attention from abroad towards the Mexican creative industries, from chefs to film directors, everything helps to attract attention to fashion.”
Your brand has also put Mexico on the map and has experienced growth in different aspects, from fashion shows to store openings. How has this latest stage been for the brand?
“I am very grateful for the response from people, the press, celebrities and everyone. It has been a process of rapid expansion and surprising growth, which makes me satisfied with what we are doing. I am living every moment to the fullest, it is a dream.”
You recently walked the closing catwalk at Intermoda 81. What can you share with us about that collection?
“The collection is Frontera, it is in stores and it is autumn/winter. It celebrates the other culture that is generated between the United States and Mexico, it is as if it were a third culture that mixes the two things; in particular it is inspired by the Lowriders (…) it is this question that we ask ourselves: when does it stop being Mexico and when does it begin? But more than anything it is celebrating that this relationship exists, it has forms of expression that nourish both cultures.”
The collection was presented at Fashion Space. How do you perceive this platform?
“A very enriching space. There is a first-class setup and screens, the whole team behind it makes it a true experience to carry it out. There are no limitations in the sense of creatives to creatives. It is the culmination of presenting a collection that takes months of work; Fashion Space is a space that celebrates Mexican fashion a lot.
What has Intermoda meant for Montserrat Messeguer?
“Intermoda is a very important fair, where national and international fashion deals are closed in Mexico. We have managed to connect and generate synergy with buyers, suppliers and colleagues. It is a very important fair that makes alliances with other key organizations. Intermoda is an important pillar for fashion in our country.”
Anything else you would like to share with Intermoda readers?
"This November marks seven years since I presented my first collection. At first it was a hobby and people's response made me dedicate myself to this one hundred percent. It is a date of celebration and we are going to close with events in our stores, pampering our clients on these important dates and continuing to prepare ourselves."
