Why is Chanel No. 5 Considered a Great Perfume?
"N°5, the very essence of femininity. An aldehydic floral bouquet enhanced by an emblematic bottle with minimalist lines. An iconic and timeless perfume," is how Chanel defines its emblematic product.
Founded by Coco Chanel in 1910, the renowned French fashion house has diversified over the decades. In addition to dresses that have created highly recognizable silhouettes, its history—worthy of admiration and an entire feature—has delivered multiple products.
Among them are makeup, watches, accessories, jewelry, treatments, and, of course, perfumes. The enigmatic world of scents has found common ground with different fashion houses throughout time.
Chanel is perhaps one of the most recognized and media-hyped cases, thanks to its No. 5 fragrance. But what is the fascination with this perfume, and why does it continue to be successful decades after its launch?
To answer that question, let's review some points that are part of the universe of this spectacular fashion house.
The Origin
It was in 1921 when Gabrielle Chanel asked Ernest Beaux (a renowned French perfumer of Russian origin) to create a perfume for women.
But not just any perfume, but one "for women that smells like a woman," as the brand describes it.
Several proposals were presented to Mademoiselle. She finally chose version number 5 of the fragrance. The name stuck, and the rest is history.
The notes? Well, a combination of fresh aromas. A floral bouquet that brings together the best of May rose and jasmine. Perhaps a soft touch of vanilla and sensuality.

The Evolution
According to official Chanel information, it was in 1986 when Jacques Polge, the brand's perfumer since the late seventies, reinterpreted his predecessor's olfactory score to create a new, broader version of No. 5: the Eau de Parfum.
The Reasons
Why Chanel No. 5 is a famous perfume and virtually loved by millions of women throughout this time is difficult to explain.
Perhaps it's because it was one of the first commercial fragrances to use aldehydes (which made its floral aroma so recognizable), but bearing the name of one of history's most emblematic fashion designers also adds an aura of relevance.
Additionally, around the perfume, this fashion brand has launched various advertising campaigns starring celebrities, models, and figures associated with beauty or luxury.
The most recent? Starring Australian actress Margot Robbie since 2024, set on the beautiful roads of California.
